The Dedica is very slim, which makes it a good fit for small counters and apartments. It has a stainless steel body and a manual steam wand. Many versions ship with pressurized baskets, which are forgiving if your coffee or grinder is not dialed in, so check which baskets come in the box.

Who it is for: anyone short on space who still wants a real espresso machine.

• Pros: very narrow, attractive design, easy to live with.
• Cons: limited accessory choices with the smaller portafilter, and pressurized baskets can mask the quality of your grind.

Verdict: a solid compact option for casual home use.
